Things I’m Loving Lately #1 (#LinkUp)

I’ve made a decision to take Divya up on her challenge. It is refreshing to have to think about the week’s positive encounters. As a homeschooling parent who is also building a full time blogging career, it is easy to overlook the little blessings and joys that I encounter along the way.

Time4Learning

This week was particularly a challenge for us. We had to face the fact that our nine-year-old’s curriculum was not working for her. She (Aya) loves to learn, but we did notice this year that she was not as enthusiastic. It is sorted now – we reverted to Time4learning. Most of the courses there are interactive, although she hates their Social Studies. It is a bit wordy (while the others are in a cartoon, interactive style). Fortunately for us, it comes with loads of hands-on work and projects. This should keep her busy for a while. Out of all of that, Time4Learning is one of the things that I have loved lately.

The Originals

I haven’t been paying much attention, so my sister reminded me that our favorite original vampire family is back on the screen. I know it’s weird , but this imperfect family resonates with a lot of families out there. No, most families are not vampires 😂, but they do squabble, betray each other, yet do come together and fight for each other when they need to. This reminds me never to come between siblings, no matter how much they seem to hate each other.

Mark Crilley

To be honest, I do not know much about this guy, except that he is helping LJ (our teen son) to perfect his drawing skills. We had to remove him from the public school system because he was clearly not coping. Being ADHD, he is more artistically inclined so it became our duty to ensure that he excels at it. I feel that he wasted last year with Japanese anime, while he could have been perfecting some basics like being able to capture facial expressions, certain body movements, etc. This is what he came up with after yesterday’s lesson (his first one)

Mark Crilley’s courses are available here.

That, is my first attempt at “things I’m loving lately”. I will now be mindful of the little joys in my life and have more to share next time. I, however, cannot promise that these joys won’t come through the lives of my kids😉 . My family sort of defines me – and I am cool with that.

So, what things are you loving lately? Tell us all about them and join the party.

Thanks for sharing the things that you are “loving” this week. This is particularly challenging because sometimes we get bogged down in the big daunting stuff that consumes are mind, but there is always beauty somewhere to be found. For me it was my daughter’s realization that her big girl tooth is coming out! She was so happy and this evenings visit to Baskin Robbins for $1.31 scoops.

We tried Time4Learning. It’s nice, but it’s not my favorite system to use. However, it does work well. My kids enjoyed it too except for Social Studies. It was more costly than I wanted to pay though since I knew I could teach them for free using other sources. (With three kids the cost added up quickly.)

I get where you are coming from Crys…..The science and the SS does start to be wordy after a while – but we are mentally prepared this time around (we’ll also supplement with Youtube videos). The textbooks were just not stimulating her to learn. I’m glad to find another homeschooler:-). Please do hang around.

I enjoyed what you shared and your son has a real talent for drawing. If that’s what he does after his first lesson, he’s gonna be a force to be reckoned with!

I did not know about Time4Learning and would like to find out a little more about it.
I know a mom who has been worried about her child’s curriculum too.

Hi Sheri – you can send this blog post to the mom. She can just click on the T4L image for more info. There is also an FB group called: Time4Learning Families. The parents there will be helpful.

What a great list. I really need to get back to having hobbies and interests apart from blogging and entrepreneurship. This is such an interesting list. Thanks for sharing.
